DTF transfers are the most forgiving heat transfer you can buy. No weeding, no cutting, full color on dark garments, and they work on fabrics that vinyl and sublimation can't touch.
But the settings matter, and most sellers hand you a sheet of film with no instructions at all.
Here's exactly how we press ours, what to change if you bought your film somewhere else, and how to fix it when something goes wrong.
What you need
- A heat press. A household iron will not work. It can't hold an even temperature or apply even pressure across the whole design, and DTF needs both.
- Your DTF transfer, printed side down against the fabric.
- Butcher paper, parchment, or a teflon sheet for the second press.
- A lint roller. One stray fiber under the film shows up as a bubble.
The settings we use
We print on an xTool Apparel Printer. These are the settings xTool publishes for their own DTF film:

Two things to know before you copy these numbers
Pressure doesn't transfer between machines. xTool specifies Level 3 pressure, but that's a setting on their own HP2 press. If you're on a different press, there is no Level 3 to select. Use your press's medium-to-firm setting for heat transfer film and adjust based on a test press. xTool says the same thing in their own documentation: for a different heat press, use its material-specific pressure setting.
Six seconds is short. That's specific to xTool's film. Plenty of DTF films on the market need 15 to 20 seconds at a similar temperature, and peel timing varies by film. If you bought your transfers somewhere else, ask the seller for their numbers. Using the wrong dwell time is the single most common reason a transfer fails.
Step by step
- Pre-press the garment for 6 seconds. This drives out moisture and flattens wrinkles. Skipping it is the number one cause of a transfer that lifts at the edges a week later.
- Lint roll the print area. Takes five seconds and saves a shirt.
- Position the transfer, printed side down. For a standard adult front, center it roughly three inches below the collar seam. Keep the whole design inside the platen.
- Press at 320°F for 6 seconds at medium-to-firm pressure.
- Move the garment off the platen and let it cool. Ten to twenty seconds, until it's below about 212°F. It should be warm to the touch, not hot.
- Peel the carrier film. Roll it back on itself, low and slow. Don't pull it straight up.
- Cover the design with butcher paper and press again for 6 seconds. This is what locks the ink into the fibers and takes the shine off. Most people skip it, and it's the difference between a print that survives twenty washes and one that survives a hundred.
- Check the edges. On a large design, or anywhere that looks like it needs more adhesion, center that area under the platen, cover with butcher paper, and repeat the cycle. Then let the garment cool completely before you fold or move it.
Hot peel, warm peel, cold peel — what's the difference?
It's a property of the film, not a choice you get to make.
Peeling a cold-peel film while it's still hot will lift the design straight off the shirt. Waiting too long on a hot-peel film can make the carrier stick. If you don't know which film you have, ask the seller for its peel instructions before pressing. Do not assume that every film can be peeled cold.
Troubleshooting
The transfer peeled off in the wash
Almost always not enough pressure, or no second press. DTF needs firmer pressure than vinyl. The ink has to be pushed into the fibers, not laid on top of them.
The edges lifted right after pressing
The garment wasn't pre-pressed, or you peeled while it was too hot. Moisture trapped in the fabric stops the adhesive from bonding.
The print is cracking
Usually too hot or too long. Overcooked adhesive turns brittle. Check that your press is actually holding the temperature it displays — a lot of cheap presses read 20°F high.
The print looks dull or shiny
Normal right after the first press. That's exactly what the second press with butcher paper fixes.
There's a faint square outline around the design
Press marks from the edge of the platen. Use a larger cover sheet, or a pressing pillow.
The colors look washed out on a dark shirt
Check that the transfer went down printed side against the fabric. A DTF transfer laid the wrong way presses the carrier, not the ink.
Can I press DTF on polyester?
Yes, and that's one of its real advantages over other methods. DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends, canvas, denim and most poly-cotton performance fabrics.
Polyester is heat sensitive, though. Dark polyester in particular can scorch or suffer dye migration, where the garment's own dye bleeds up into your print and turns white areas pink or grey. Drop the temperature and shorten the dwell, and always test on a scrap of the same garment before you commit to a run.
Washing
Turn the garment inside out. Cold water, tumble dry low. No bleach, no fabric softener, and don't run an iron directly over the print. Wait 24–48 hours after pressing before the first wash, following xTool’s aftercare guidance.
