You need six shirts. Not twenty-four. Six.
Maybe it's for a small team, a birthday, a pop-up booth, or a design you want to see on an actual body before you commit to a hundred of them. So you email a print shop, and the reply comes back: our minimum is 24 pieces per design, plus a setup fee.
That's the wall most people hit the first time they try to get something custom printed. Here's why that wall exists, why it doesn't exist here, and what changes when it's gone.
Why most print shops have minimums in the first place
It isn't greed. It's screen printing.
Traditional screen printing requires physical setup before a single shirt gets printed. Each ink color in your design needs its own screen, and each screen has to be coated, burned, aligned, and washed out afterward. Shops typically charge a one-time setup fee to cover it — one shop publishes a flat $65 screen setup on runs of 24–47 pieces, which is fairly typical.
Here's the part that matters: that setup work takes the same amount of time and materials whether the run is 24 shirts or 200.
- Spread $65 across 200 shirts and it's about 33¢ a shirt. Invisible.
- Spread the same $65 across 6 shirts and it's almost $11 a shirt — before the shirt itself, before the ink, before labor.
That's why minimums exist. Industry-wide they usually land somewhere between 12 pieces at smaller shops, 24 at most, and 48–72 at larger production houses. Below those numbers, the setup cost eats the order alive and the job stops making sense for the shop and for you at the same time.
So the minimum isn't a policy someone invented to be difficult. It's the break-even point of a specific piece of equipment.
What "small batch" actually means
Small batch means the order is printed when you place it, in the quantity you actually asked for. One shirt is a real order. So is four, or eleven, or thirty.
Nothing is pre-printed and stacked in a warehouse waiting for someone to want it. There's no size curve to guess at, no leftover box of XLs in your closet, and no case pack you have to buy into.
How printing without a minimum works
Instead of burning screens, we print your artwork onto a transfer film and heat-press it into the garment. The design goes from your file to the press without any of the per-color setup that screen printing needs.
Which means the economics flip:
- No screens, so no setup fee. Not waived, not discounted — it isn't part of the process.
- Color count doesn't change the price. A four-color design costs the same to run as a one-color design. Full-color photos and gradients are fine.
- The cost to print shirt #1 is basically the cost to print shirt #40. That's the whole reason a single piece can be priced like a bulk piece.
Our Double Sided Customizable T-Shirt starts at $25 whether you order one or a dozen — and front and back printing is included in that price, not billed as a second location.
What this changes for you
Small businesses and side hustles. Four staff shirts for a shop with four employees. A logo tote to hand a customer. A run of ten for a market booth to see if branded merch actually moves before you order a hundred.
Events and occasions. Bachelorette weekends, family reunions, birthdays, team dinners, road trips. Guest lists change, and you shouldn't have to pad an order to hit someone else's number.
Testing a design. Print one. Wear it. Wash it. See how the graphic sits on a real body at real scale, then scale up if it works. That single sample is cheaper than being wrong about 50 shirts.
Ordering the sizes people actually wear. When there's no minimum per design, there's no minimum per size either. Two mediums, one XL, one 3XL is a normal order, not a special request.
The honest math on a small order
Say you need six shirts with a two-color logo. Here's the shape of it — the screen printing column uses that published $65 setup figure as an example, since exact quotes vary shop to shop:
| 6 shirts, one design | Screen printed | Small batch, no minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum to place the order | Usually 12–24 pieces | 1 piece |
| Setup fee | Roughly $65, often per color | $0 |
| Setup cost per shirt at qty 6 | About $11 | $0 |
| What you go home with | 12–24 shirts | 6 shirts |
The setup fee is only half the cost. The other half is the shirts you didn't need but had to buy to reach the minimum.
When a minimum is actually the better deal
Worth saying plainly: screen printing wins at volume. Once you're past roughly 50–75 pieces of a single design in a single color count, that setup fee has spread thin enough that the per-shirt cost drops below what made-to-order printing can do. If you're printing 200 identical shirts, a screen shop is the right call and you should take it.
Small batch is built for everything under that line — which is most orders most people place. And our bulk discounts apply automatically as you climb toward it: 20% off at 10+ pieces, 30% off at 20+, and 40% off at 30+. No quote request, no negotiation. The price just drops in the cart.

Small-batch custom printing FAQ
Can I really order just one shirt?
Yes. One is a normal order and it's priced the same per piece as any other small run.
Is there a setup or art fee?
No. There's no screen to burn, so there's nothing to charge you for. The price on the product page is the price.
Does a design with lots of colors cost more?
No. One color or full color, the print costs the same. Photos and gradients are fine.
Can I mix sizes and colors in one order?
Yes. Every piece is printed individually, so there's no size curve or case pack to buy into.
Can I print the front and the back?
Yes, and on the Double Sided Customizable T-Shirt both sides are included in the base price. On our Rose Originals graphic tees, you can add a customizable back for $5 — here's how that works.
How long does a small order take?
Most orders ship in 2–5 business days. Small orders aren't slower than large ones — often the opposite.
What if the design doesn't come out how I pictured it?
Customized items are final sale, since each one is printed specifically for your artwork. Non-customized items can be returned within 30 days. If you're unsure about a design, order one first — that's what no minimum is for.
Do you handle bigger orders too?
Yes. Bulk discounts kick in automatically at 10, 20, and 30 pieces. For larger runs, wholesale, or printing on blanks you supply yourself, get in touch.
Start with what you actually need
The minimum was never about you. It was about equipment that needed a certain number of shirts to justify itself. Print a different way and that number goes to one.
Design your own on the Customizable T-Shirt, browse the ready-made Rose Originals, or read more about custom T-shirt printing in Los Angeles with no minimum. Order one. Order thirty. Either one is a real order here.
